For the movie news week that was we capture both the highs and the lows in one neat little package. Enjoy!

Best: Could Paranormal Activity be the best horror film of the year?

The rumour and buzz mill have been on overdrive for what’s shaping up to be the highlight of the year for horror fans. Paramount Pictures’ new super low budget movie Paranormal Activity has only been playing in selected cities across the US and reaction has been so intense that plans seem to be brewing for an international release. The film deals with the home footage escapades of a couple who believe their house may be haunted. Quicker than you can say Blair Witch Project, they set up a camera in the bedroom to capture the ghostly occurrences and all hell breaks loose.

The movie’s website set up a viral campaign to receive a wider release with reportedly hundreds of thousands of fans demanding the film receive a wider release. The trailer seems to perfectly capture the level of trauma we all have to look forward.

The good news for Melbourne fans is that the movie has just been included as part of ACMI’s Hello Darkness Horror Film Festival, with a single screening taking place on the 26th of October. No word just yet for the rest of the population but we’ll keep you posted.

Worst: Showgirls 2 in the works

I’m sorry to be the one to break this to you dear reader but it seems that plans are moving forward on a Showgirls sequel. The original is commonly referred to as one of the worst films of the '90s yet thanks to all the bare flesh and stripping continues to make the studio some much needed cash. According to Joblo.com (through German website Extratipp.com) the follow-up will be called Showgirls: A Story of Hope and centres around a minor character from the original called, you guessed it, Hope.

At a cost of $25 million the plot supposedly involves a dead stripper, her brother, some drug dealers and a revenge plot of sorts, all taking place in the beautifully picturesque city of Frankfurt. If you haven’t seen the original I urge you to as it takes the “so-bad-it’s-good” category to another level. Here’s but a taste…
