For the movie news week that was we capture both the highs and the lows in one neat little package. Enjoy!

Best: The Dark Knight director to try his hand at Superman

Christopher Nolan is a hero in many people’s books. He was able to resuscitate the Batman franchise from the catastrophe that was Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin. Well according to Deadline Hollywood Daily the Batman Begins director will try his considerable talents at making Superman relevant for a new generation.

From early reports Warner Bros. has requested Nolan to help in rebooting the series after the less than spectacular Superman Returns. It seems that Nolan’s involvement would be less hands on than with the Batman series, in which he served as writer and director, and will simply oversee the artistic process. What we do know is that the film series will probably continue with the origin story trend that seems to be engulfing Hollywood. While the last chapter was decent enough it felt more like a homage to the great 70s film than a reimagining of the world’s best known superhero.

Nolan is perfectly suited to reinvigorate this lagging franchise.

Worst: Valentine’s Day sequel already on the way

Thanks to films like He's Just Not That into You and last week’s release Valentine’s Day, it seems that one of the new trends in romantic comedies is large ensemble casts with horrible scripts. Both movies have made a bundle of money and understandably movie studios are keen on cashing in on the success of these films.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Warner Bros. has green-lit a sequel to Valentine’s Day titled New Year’s Eve. A scriptwriter has already been commissioned to develop the story which would follow a similar structure and possibly include some of the same cast members but obviously set during the titular holiday.

I have no issues with large ensemble casts and when done correctly, please see any Robert Altman film to see how it should be made, can be quite enjoyable. So far these films have felt like a quickly patched together mess that is clearly more intent on making a quick buck than providing an entertaining product.

Everyone involve deserves better ... well except maybe Ashton Kutcher.
