TheVine presents Pinku Eiga

In the years since the end of World War II, eroticism had been gradually making its way into Japanese cinema. The Pinku Eiga soft-porn genre was a huge success in the Japanese domestic cinema market from the 60s through to the 80s.
Due to censorship laws, the filmmakers were forced to be more imaginative with erotic imagery than their western counterparts, resulting in cinema that leaves a lot up to the imagination, engaging the minds as well as the bodies of audiences.
The accompanying promotional posters were similarly required to be discreet yet suggestive. Responding to the limits of their brief, the designs were pushed in abstract directions, resulting in dark and startling graphic works.
This extensive, meticulously catalogued collection spanning the 60s to the 90s was discovered in the backrooms of a cinema in Osaka, Japan. The exhibition is as much a celebration of avant-garde design as a documentation of an intriguing genre.
TheVine is proud to present the Pinku Eiga exhibition at Don't Come Gallery, Royal Arcade, 314 Little Collins Street, Melbourne from July 30 until August 9.
