Just when you thought Hollywood had run out of films to remake Variety has reported that a “reimagining” of the mid nineties Brandon Lee classic is on its way. I believe this constitutes the final straw as it has become evident that the ideas barrel has run so dry we are remaking films that were made little over a decade ago.
The man responsible for ruining Allan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Stephen Norrington, has officially signed on to direct and write a new version of the legendary James O’Barr graphic novel. It appears as though somewhere in his deluded state of mind he believes that the Alex Proyas 1994 classic was crying out for a remake. As if it wasn’t enough that the never-ending straight to video sequels and unfortunate TV series (funnily enough starring the US’ Iron Chef as The Crow) ruined the franchise we now have this unfortunate bit of news.
The Crow was a beautifully gothic film that was even more touching due to the premature death of its star Brandon Lee. Australian Alex Proyas really set a new standard for comic book films that you could argue visually influenced everything that came after, including The Dark Knight. Thanks to an incredibly good soundtrack and Lee looking pretty darn cool, many individuals out there hold the film in high regard. Why improve on perfection?
Norrington did a decent job on Blade so not all is lost but in a recent statement he said:
“Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style"
From his comments, I don’t think he has ever read the books or even really understands what The Crow is about. Why is Hollywood so determined to ruin classics rather than invest in new interesting ideas?
If you haven’t seen the original, do so straight away you will not be disappointed.
