Michael Jackson fandom is living on at cinemas around the world. Is This It, the documentary made about his planned worldwide tour this year, has made $22,000,000 on its first day of simultaneous global release.

Sony Pictures spokesman Steve Elzer said the movie is a "reaffirmation of the global appeal of Michael Jackson.

"The studio believes that the worldwide launch, with very strong performance across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia, represents an amazing beginning for the film," he continued in the company's statement.

The film was purportedly only to be released for a fortnight, although the studios are now intimating the run could be longer. As if it wasn't always going to be, as if the "limited season" were not just a way to get people in on the first few days...

There is also a suggestion that the film could be nominated for an Oscar.

Of course, the film is a surrogate experience for those people who had tickets for Jackson's 2009 performances. It's reported that 800,000 tickets had been sold at the time of Jackson's death.
