The new iPhone has landedWe could go on all day about the astounding design that is cranked out of the Apple factory, but the big news this week is the release of the
new iPhone. Due to hit stores mid-July, Apple’s new addition to the Aussie mobile market has techno-geeks blogging overtime.
There’s always a wave of excitement that sweeps the design industry when Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, gets up to announce a new product, but the difference this time is that Australia will be one of the first countries to revel in the new iPhone’s glory.
The new iPhone will be 3G compatible, and work on the Optus, and Vodafone mobile networks. It will incorporate GPS, and an upgraded version of the iPhone software. But most importantly it is so unbelievably sweet looking (and we assume devilishly brilliant to use), that it makes even the most seasoned design critics week at the knees.
Rumour is that the price is set to be fairly reasonable too. It’s about 200 bucks US. Hey, this is a design column, not a maths lesson - you figure it out.
Musical chairs ... kind ofWho hasn’t sat around aimlessly drumming on the side of a table? Hell, I’m doing it right now.
Well take a deep breath, you Keith Moon, Dave Grohl and Danny Carey wannabes. Washington based furniture designer Tor Clausen has a treat in store for you. Clausen runs a business in Olympia, Washington that makes musical tables. It’ll make sense when you watch the video, but trust me, these things are seriously cool.
The Musical Furniture website makes it look like a geeky game of wooden twister, but can you imagine the fun you could have with a few musical mates, a couple of drinks, and a “Rumba Table”?
Visually they’re not going to change the world, but they sure do sound sweet. Now how many tables can you say that about?
Melbourne International Design FestivalIt’s that time of year again, a time where design experts, and observers from all around the globe converge on Melbourne to eat, sleep, and breathe design for a few heady, design-soaked days. That’s right, my friends, it’s time for the fourth annual
Melbourne International Design Festival. The festival takes the shape of around 50 design-related lectures, exhibitions, and forum events spotted all around the city from July 17 – 24.
Keep your eyes peeled for the coming editions of
I heart design for more info, or go see it for yourself. The festival is presented by the National Design Centre and is themed
Strength in Numbers. Check out the
website for event times and details.
Rockstar WatchIf you want to talk about the rockstars of the design industry, you needn’t look much further than Australian born designer,
Marc Newson. And if you want to talk about the rockstar of watches, look no further than The Horizon, designed by Newson and produced by
Ikepod. Horizon is a limited edition of wrist watches, each one signed, numbered, and constructed from platinum, red gold and titanium.
You can safely say that these bad boys won’t be available down at your local shopping centre, but for around $25,000, you might be better off picking one up next time you’re in New York or London.
