December is always a spectacular time of year for film lovers. Thanks to the start of the all important awards season, we are usually treated to films of considerable quality as movie studios make sure their release is fresh on the voters’ minds.

For film buffs Santa brings his own very special present on Boxing Day as cinemas are full to the brim with new releases. If the past few years are anything to go by amongst the boring family friendly drivel we might be treated to the cinematic highlight of the year. Fingers crossed.

This is also a time when we forget about the filmic disappointments of 2009 and look towards the New Year with renewed hope and wonder at the films in store.

As part of what has become an annual tradition we look forward to the films in 2010 that we should get excited about. As always the final product may be a soul crushing disappointment but for now we can simply dream about the year ahead. In no particular order here are our ten picks.

10. Shutter Island
Leonard DiCaprio seems to be on a roll and has proven time and time again that that he knows how to pick a great script. The biggest reason to see this is to Scorsese tackle horror and thanks to an incredibly creepy trailer this looks full of potential.

9. Alice in Wonderland
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Need I say more.

8. Iron Man 2
The first one was incredible and with the whole team back on board and all the exposition out of the way it should get down to action packed business pretty quickly.

7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
Excellent trailer, plus it’s Harry Potter.

6. Legion
This looks like a stunning action film of biblical proportions and if the trailer is anything to go by it will be one of the highlights of 2010.

5. Date Night
The trailer doesn’t look spectacular, which is kind of disappointing, but the match up of Steve Carrell and Tina Fey alone makes this one worth viewing.

4. Inception
Christopher Nolan’s first film since the excellent Dark Knight is being promoted as a contemporary science fiction action flick. The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Caine

3. Hot Tub Time Machine
With a title that is so dumb, how could this possible fail?

2. Robin Hood
Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe have had their share of hits and misses, but if there is anything these two do well it’s historical epics. Inevitable comparisons to Gladiator aside, this also has Cate Blanchett giving the film some serious acting credentials.

1. Toy Story 3
After this year’s Up I have absolute trust and faith in anything that Pixar is willing to release.
