It's time to start planning your
Eurovision Song Contest parties, complete with karaoke machines for the ad breaks, stomach-churning finger food from the eastern block and costumes comprising lederhosen.
SBS has just announced that they will be screening all the glitz and glamour from May 23 - 25.
The good news is that for the first time in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest, two
Semi-Finals will be held to decide which 25 countries will be
represented in the Final. This is because there will be a record breaking
43 countries taking part this year, resulting in a whopping seven hours of coverage over
the three consecutive nights.
Julia Zemiro has signed up to present the contest for Australian audiences (but fans of the comp will be pleased to know that comic genius Terry Wogan will still be offering his commentary throughout).
Just in case you haven't discovered the brilliance that is the Eurovision Song Contest, it began in 1956 and is now viewed by more than 100
million people around the globe. Over the years the contest has given rise to legendary names and icons of
kitsch such as ABBA, Bucks Fizz, Sandie Shaw, Brotherhood of Man, Dana
International, Celine Dion, Katrina and the Waves, Lulu and Australia’s
Gina G.
Tune in. You won't see more gharish costumes and ill-advised dance routines anywhere in the world.
SBS screening times:SEMI FINAL #1 - Friday, May 23, 7.30pm.
