BRITNEY AND MEL ARE GOIN' ON A SUMMER HOLIDAY

Britney Spears has found a new holiday companion in Mel Gibson.

According to reports, Spears has jetted off to Costa Rica with Mel Gibson, his wife and her father.

The group is set to stay at the Gibson mansion for a few days.

Gibson and Spears were former neighbours in Malibu, and Gibson offered to help when the pop star was at her lowest earlier this year.

"Mel and his wife Robin clearly saw a woman in crisis and wanted to extend themselves in any way possible,'' a friend of the Gibsons told a celebrity magazine.

STIPE STILL RAW ABOUT COBAIN'S DEATH

R.E.M. star Michael Stipe can no longer listen to an entire Nirvana album because remembering the death of his friend Kurt Cobain is still too painful.

The rocker admits to being a huge fan of the band and regrets he hasn't been able to listen to classic albums like Nevermind and In Utero since Cobain killed himself in 1994.

He says, "The great tragedy of his death is that, as an artist, as someone pushing things forward, he was really pushing himself.

"He had reached a point where he was about to push through to something that was so phenomenal and so beautiful.

"It was all written, it was all right there and it was so obvious where he was going, and then he didn't make it.

"I still have trouble... I can't listen to an entire Nirvana record."

BEYONCE TO BECOME A DESPERATE HOUSEWIFE?

R&B superstar Beyonce Knowles is reportedly in talks to join the cast of TV hit Desperate Housewives.

The singer/actress' manager father Matthew Knowles has allegedly already landed the singer a guest appearance on the programme, but according to reports, he is looking to secure Beyonce a more prominent role.

A source in the Knowles camp tells MediaTakeOut.com, "They've already agreed to give Beyonce a cameo appearance. But (we're) hoping that (she) could be written in for a recurring role, or possibly even a permanent one."

MISCHA SAYS "OUI" TO GAY PARIS

Mischa Barton has escaped the temptations of Hollywood following her 2007 arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) - by moving to Paris.

The former The O.C. star was sentenced to three years' unsupervised probation in April, after she was arrested in Los Angeles last year for driving under the influence of alcohol, possessing marijuana and driving without a license.

But Barton is now eager to leave her wild ways behind her, and has temporarily set up home in the French capital.

And the 21-year-old admits she loves the close proximity Paris has to Cannes, where she is currently attending the Cannes Film Festival.

She tells People.com, "I'm living in Paris right now, so I thought I would come down for a few days.

"I've been coming here since I was 12, so I know the deal. It's always good fun."

Asked why she chose to relocate to Paris, she adds: "No reason. I've just always wanted to move there. I'm enjoying some time off."

CRUISE TO TAKE ON THE ROLE OF PRESIDENT? HEAVEN HELP US ALL.

Tom Cruise is set to become the latest movie star to get a taste of real power - and play the U.S. President.

The Mission: Impossible star is in talks to play America's leader in Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce's new movie 28th Amendment.

Movie news website MovieHole.net reports Cruise is the favourite to play President Ben Cahill in the action thriller, which follows his character as he battles the leaders of a super secret organisation, who control all U.S. affairs.

Denzel Washington will reportedly play the leader of the sect Cruise's character is out to destroy.

Cruise joins a long list of stars who have played fictional presidents, including Kevin Kline (Dave), Michael Douglas (The American President) and Robin Williams (Man of The Year).
