Simon Lovelace is exhibiting as part of the amazing line up at this year's Art Melbourne - an art fair that is all embracing.  Simon talks about his work and all the fun of the fair.

What is the core subject matter of your Art Melbourne work - how does it link up with the work that has lead up to all this?
I do not tend to change my output to suit shows, rather it's a continuation of ideas that interest me. However, along the way some ideas meander away from a central theme.

New trends and construction techniques also decide final output.

For Art Melbourne there is love lost, love found, and death, as always, is only a heartbeat away.

What does "pop" mean these days?
Pop has a continued relationship with consumerism. One drives the other. Underground trend setters today become the artwork on a cereal packet tomorrow.

I like to trawl the entire history of 'pop' using what suits. Editing and reconstructing. A mash-up of subtexts and frivolity.

Would you call your work nostalgic?
Yes. As a folk song from Switzerland evokes snowy vistas and yodeling.

Why do you think events like Art Melbourne are important?  How does it serve artists differently from gallery situations?
Instead of trying to market oneself to a broader audience, art fairs generalize themes and bring a wider appeal to an event. Buyers come to buy. If your work stands out then your onto a winner.

Gallery environments have a more serious nature and because of the context will have different outcomes and results. Both have their place on the landscape of artistic endeavors.

How do you get noticed at a massive event like this?
Have a fucking great stand of artwork!

What are you looking forward to at Art Melbourne?
Getting out of Sydney & finding good coffee!

Where do you always head in Melbourne?
As I literally have no idea where I am in Melbourne, It's always going to be an adventure. Head out the door and see where we end up!

Advice for young artists wanting to get represented.
Art is 'doing'. So keep doing it. Stay true to your own ideals and never subjugate yourself to fit in.

What are some of your favourite things in your studio at the moment?
My collection of synthesizers. They are patient lovers waiting to scream.
