Last week you might've heard there was this new video from Lady GaGa doing the rounds. I mean, in between eating, sleeping and working on your cancer vaccine. Or maybe you were at that cafe job. The one you do every weekend, saving up to master your solo record. Well you're going to have to wait a little longer dude, 'cause there's a little less currency floating around the economy. It was spent on this:
Lady GaGa (w/Beyonce) - 'Telephone'
Interesting fact this week: The Wikipedia entry for this one song is longer than the entire entry for the band Phoenix. In the GaGa entry we learn that Quentin Tarantino personally offered Lady GaGa the "Pussy Wagon" from his Kill Bill movies while the two were "at lunch". Terrific. From
E! Online:
"There was this really amazing quality in 'Paparazzi', where it kind of had this pure pop music quality but at the same time it was a commentary on fame culture. In its own way, even at certain points working with Jonas, really achieved this high art quality in the way that it was shot. I wanted to do the same thing with this video—take a decidedly pop song, which on the surface has a quite shallow meaning, and turn it into something deeper. [...] There certainly is a Tarantino-inspired quality in the video, [...] I mostly love the way he uses different forms to create something new. His direct involvement in the video came from him lending me the Pussy Wagon . We were having lunch one day in Los Angeles and I was telling him about my concept for the video and he loved it so much he said, 'You gotta use the Pussy Wagon.'"
Critics have subsequently frothed over the video, saying:
"This is Gaga's video, but Beyoncé is the best part: she actually shows the angry, crazy side that we just knew lurked beneath her too-perfect facade." - New York Magazine, (Uh, no she's "actually" acting);
"Is it as good as her epic 'Bad Romance' video? Sadly, I don’t think so. But it’s better than anything else out there." - Entertainment Weekly, (poor
Ok Go); and Bill Lamp from About.com's self-referential,
"It would be nearly impossible for it to live up to the advanced hype, but the Lady Gaga video for 'Telephone' has arrived, and, to these eyes, it is worth watching." Cut from Bill's quote: "My eyes also enjoy soaking in farmyard accidents involving toddlers, nun lynchings and Cerebal Palsy Parkour Hour." Oh Lamp. You wag.
I then chimed in by likening it to a cheeseburger made from panda hearts fried in dolphin blood, being chewed up by Jack Nicholson, shat out by Bill O'Reilly, handed to a cackling Captain America who douses it with oil before balancing it on the fake tit of Paris Hilton long enough for a nude George Bush to run up and boot it into the camera lens where it explodes in a blister of stars, stripes and burning kitten tongues. Sure it's pretty fun but OH GOD CLICK THROUGH THE PHOTOS!
