Gabriel Garcia Marquez is suffering from dementia

This sad news surfaced via the brother of the Columbian author and Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Jamie Garcia Marquez was giving a lecture to a group of students in the city of Cartagena when spoke of his brother’s health, saying “he has problems with his memory” and that he often receives calls from his brother asking basic questions. He has apparently stopped writing all together.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, now 85, is most well known for his 1967 novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, but has also penned the works Love in the Time of Cholera, Chronicle of a Death Foretold and The General in His Labyrinth. The news seems particularly sad in light of the content of Marquez’s novels, often awash with the themes of memory and nostalgia.
