It's mean a massive boring few months soaking up news of the US Democratic party trying to sort out a candidate to face John McCain, Bush's successor. Finally, Obama has taken the lead in so many tedious ways that an Australian shouldn't have to know about. Do you think the Americans knew this much about the Mark Latham/Kev Rudd showdown? No way.
So now the demos have their first black presidential candidate. That is great. It wasn't that long ago that the black man was downtrodden and couldn't dream of these heights. It would also have been great to have the first female candidate, but that didn't pan out despite Hil's mills $$.
Will Obama though do more than simply be the black candidate? While it's awesome, it's still a politician we're looking at here. What will he do for wars, women, poverty, global warming?
They say you have to work twice as hard to be half as good as a white man, and Obama has a lot to prove that he's not just black.
