Imagine you are seated at a table with two bowls in front of you. One contains peanuts, the other tablets of the illegal recreational drug MDMA (ecstasy).
A stranger joins you, and you have to decide whether to give them a peanut or a pill. Which is safest?
You should give them ecstasy, of course. A much larger percentage of people suffer a fatal acute reaction to peanuts than to MDMA.
Bluebelly was interested in the
findings published this week that stated that
"
The so-called "club drug" ecstasy is more likely than other stimulants like speed or crystal meth to kill young, healthy people who are not known as regular drug users... ".
The research then seemed to show that young people were more likely to
use ecstasy than speed or crystal meth.
This article in the New Scientist calls for a debate about drugs that reflects the true risks of substances.
What do you think? Does current reporting reflect the true risk of drugs?
Should we make peanuts illegal too?
Do we need a rational debate about drug risks?
