CanTeen and NIB launch an Australian first support service for young people with a parent with cancer
It’s hard to believe, but statistics show that young people who have a parent with cancer or had a parent who has died from cancer are more likely to suffer from psychological distress than young people that are diagnosed with cancer themselves.
A partnership between CanTeen and the NIB Foundation will see $1.5 million (donated over 3 years by the NIB foundation) invested into developing a range of support services for young people aged 12 to 24 who have a parent with cancer or who have had a parent die from cancer.
The Offspring Support Program will launch in October this year and will provide support through counselling, print resources and practical skills development.
The three pilot areas for the counselling service will be Newcastle, Brisbane and Melbourne and you don’t need to be a CanTeen Member to access the counselling support service or get copies of their fabulous resources.
