Backwater is a horror film about Cass and Mark, a couple who travels to the remote wilderness for a weekend of camping and relaxation. After realizing they are not alone in the area, they begin to suspect someone might be watching them, but are unsure of the truth. They are attacked by an unknown assailant at night, forcing them to retreat to their car as the only source of shelter, and discover the car battery has been removed. Finding themselves stranded, it is evident that Cass and Mark might be holding their own secrets from one another, and the truth is much different than what it seems.

Director Christopher Schrack warns us "As the film progresses, the story goes off into a direction that is very different than the start, which will take the audience on an unpredictable and often unsettling trip. The answers to the questions posed will be often just as chilling as the scares."

The cast consists of only four roles, all filled by incredibly talented actors. Liana Werner-Gray plays the role of Cass, Justin Tully plays the role of Mark, Andrew Roth plays the role of Glenn, and Tom Daniel plays the role of Deputy Helm. They were cast in these roles based on their talent and familiarity with the filmmakers. "I had previously worked with Andrew Roth on my first film, Elysium, and it was his knowledge within the industry that led me to the other talent." says Schrack.

Don't expect a regular horror film plot. Backwater makes a point to distance itself from every other horror film out there today. Even though many horror films are sold, the vast majority of them are formulaic and boring, as most critics and fans will agree. The film takes advantage of the best of the genre's conventions: fear-of-the-unknown, atmosphere, and believability. It is a film that challenges our perceptions of reality while still bringing to life the true essence of the genre. It is a film by a horror fan, but made not just for fans themselves, but lovers of cerebral and mind-bending films as well.

The lifecasting session was the official start of the special effects creation process. Plaster molds were taken of the actors to create certain prosthetics and make-up effects that will be integral parts of the film. From there, Stephen Tolin (www.tolinfx.com) will begin work on the special effects.
