If you're a regular here at TheVine you have no doubt already read some of
Gemma Jones' musings on the best of local and international art.
Ms Jones has made a career of spruiking the talents of great and lesser-known talents alike through her many projects and exhibitions as Curator and Editor of
Outré Gallery, and also via her
regular blogs on TheVine and
The Kaotic Kraft Kuties. Here we get a rare look at what a day in the life of a passionate artist and art lover looks like.
I Am...
Name: Gemma Jones
Occupation: Curator and editor at Outré Gallery & Publishing
Finish this sentence, “I am ... constantly driven by the creative impulse within me and in the world.“
Describe a day in your life: I'm an early rising bird. Hit the gym at 6:30, settle in for a coffee and a sugar-bun at Brother Buba Budan (around the corner from the gallery) and zone out with a little Words with Friends. Arrive at the Outré well before the gate is pulled up. Collect parcels from the post office, and get excited when it's some new prints or books. Check emails - because we deal with a lot of international artists, often there are lots of emails filtering through over night. Have a debate about music choices for the day with my work mates.
A lunch of vegetable dumplings and Chinese tea with my best friend Anita.
Post-lunch editors' meeting about our new book project. Visitors from interstate arrive, show them the new exhibition and take them for coffee. Help re-hang a wall in the gallery (mostly just my two cents worth, as I'm actually really terrible at the physical hanging).
Drive my Volkswagen across town for an exhibition opening, followed by dinner at my friend Pip's place with a little fireside crochet and chat. Come home to my kitten. Late night hot shower is a must.
Share an insider secret about your industry most people wouldn’t know: Art is does not have to be scary, expensive and inaccessible. Art can easily be part of everyone.
What inspires you? The endless creativity and positivity of the people around me.
What you can’t make it through the day without? A little sunshine
