Quite literally. From where T-world resides, look up, it’s just above us. From Melbourne that is. T-shirt heaven is without a doubt Tokyo in Japan and it’s where the T-shirt Gods shine. More specifically in Harajuku.
After ending my whirlwind trip of 8 cities in 30 days in July, I just couldn’t resist dropping by T-okyo on my way home. If you dream big and work hard most people can achieve anything. I secretly crave for T-world to be successful in this city because it will always be the heart of T-shirt obsession.
With the silly season nearly upon us, and If you’re in that mode of pondering what to do over the Christmas break, I’d highly suggest going to Tokyo on a T-shirt shopping tour. Thumb your nose at the potential global economic meltdown and come back with tees that even the most boutique shop in Australia doesn’t have yet.
Fresh tees for a fresh year I say.
Think A Bathing Ape, ALIFE, Beams-T, Billionaire Boys Club, Graniph, Supreme, X-Large, Uniqlo and that’s just for starters. The amount of spun cotton in this great city is endless.
Here’s a list of obvious starting points of where to go, but seriously, throw the map away and get yourself lost in Harajuku. It won’t be too long before you strike T-shirt gold.
•
ALIFE: 3-15-10 Jingumae, Shibuya-Ku. The front signage reads ‘Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way’ which is very apt for this superstar label.
•
A Bathing Ape: 4-21-4 Jingumae, Shibuya-Ku. Be prepared to line up though even on very quiet days. It is worth it to see what Nigo has created.
•
Beams-T: This store has been replicated across the world because it’s that good. Let’s just say, you’ll leave in a spin.
•
Billionaire Boys Club: 4-28-22 1F Jingumae, Shibuya-Ku. You’ll realise why we all scream for ice-cream after visiting this delicious store.
•
graniph: 150-0041, Tokyo-Prefecture 1-12-17 Jinnan, Shibuya-Ku. Don’t just stop here either – there are another 60 in and around Japan alone.
•
Uniqlo-T: Jingumae, Shibuya-Ku. Um, wow. No. Really. WOW.
•
Rendezvous: Cool tees here representing a number of prominent labels.
•
Supreme: 1-6 Daikanyama-Cho, Shibuya-Ku. Can these guys do no wrong?
•
X-LARGE/xla: B1F+1F 4-25-29 Jingumae, Shibuya-Ku. The legend lives on in this city more than any other on the planet. You’ll go ape over them.
Japan is the land of the rising sun. And T-shirt culture is well and truly on the rise too. Have an XL weekend!!
T-il next time,
Eddie
