What started some 3 years ago, and launched officially last year in the States, is a unique art-based program called ‘BLOC28 by Disney’.

‘BLOC28 by Disney’ is an artist series that includes tees which showcase individual artists on their vision of Disney’s most loved character, Mickey Mouse.

Mickey was created in 1928, and, in one week’s time, reaches the grand age of 80. Just in time for the special day, Mickey has been visually reinterpreted by artists from the grassroots of graffiti.

This is the second instalment in the series and features four talented and unique artists: Tenga One (Japan), Chaz Bojorquez (USA), Rime (USA) and Aroe (UK). They’ve all given Mickey a highly individual, up-to-date make-over.

Tenga is a graffiti artist/sculptor who grew up on a pop culture diet of Star Wars and animation. Chaz on the other hand, has been acknowledged as the godfather of East LA ’cholo’ style graffiti – for the last 40 years and has been exhibited in more than 130 galleries. Rime has resided in both the East and West coast, and his forte is graffiti lettering. Aroe is one of UK’s most infamous graffiti artists, having made a living from it for the last two decades.

All have one thing in common. They all see Mickey Mouse with their own unique vision, which according to BLOC28, “Walt Disney himself was always about trying different things”.

If you’re in LA, head to The Continental Gallery (408 South Spring Street, Downtown) where there intends to be an exhibition of the artwork found on these tees, during November 13th-16th.
