In general, black shoes are the fail-safe easy option that most people choose to avoid making any fashion mistakes. Most often, I'd say that black is boring and though its safe, it can often make an outfit look dare I say it, a little bit dowdy.
I've stated my case about The Sartorialist's recent comments, and though I disagree about his opinion, there is no doubt, too much black can be dowdy and frumpy.
So how to tell the difference between black = sexy and black = frumpy? Easy!
Black is best when textures are varied - in this photo, we have several textures in dark charcoal and black shades. The variation is interesting and draws your eye across the outfit, showing each piece at its best.

Incorporating texture (shiny patent leather) with a colourful outfit helps the colours look brighter and the black acts as binding ingredient for colours that might not necessarily be an obvious match. All of this happens without your eye realising.

Though I don't necessarily appreciate her style, I do appreciate her dedication to trying new things and her love of shoes. Her best trick is matching chunky and amazing black shoes in the form of wedges or ankle boots with simple white and denim dresses. It's a great look for all year round. For those of us with shorter finer hair and less amazing legs, embrace it anyway, this look is great with either low denier black tights or opaques.
