Once upon a time in Hollywood a woman was only permitted to cut her hair short if a particular role called for it (Rosemary’s Baby for example). Lopping off her locks for any other reason was considered completely ridiculous. Why that, that would be career suicide! Furthermore the suggestion she might maintain the style as opposed to beginning the arduous task of growing it out immediately was even more shocking. Yet eventually a select few styles (Mia Farrow's being one of them) were accepted. But not without opposition. For one Farrow's husband at the time Frank Sinatra was said to loath her look.

In today’s world actresses and musicians left, right and centre are happily hacking into their hair. And directors and casting agents don't seem to mind a bit. While some are cutting it for the sake of their craft, many are doing so because they just plain feel like it. Collectively you’ll find them reveling in their cute-as-a-button cuts, wearing liquid-lined eyes, thick, fluttery lashes, peachy lips and fuller brows accordingly. They’re certainly not hiding under hats, scarves, and wigs, behind their boyfriends or the walls of their compounds, shying away from the paparazzi. Nuh, uh!

Some of the best short haircuts to have um, cropped up over the years have belonged to Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Audrey Tatou, Victoria Beckham, Selma Blair, Kirsten Dunst and Chloe Sevigny. Oh and who can forget Madonna in her video for Papa Don’t Preach - for good measure. That said, it’s the new girls Carey mulligan and Mia Wasikowska to whom we should all turn for near perfect inspiration. Look out for a newly blonde Carey and an adorable, pretty as a pixie Mia at the up-coming Academy Awards.
