A former Miss Argentina Solange Magnano, 38, died on Sunday from complications following a plastic surgery procedure. Magnano had undergone a glutoplasty, a procedure that involves placing implants in the buttocks in an effort to make them firmer and rounder with a better outline. The procedure, which has grown in popularity in Argentina in recent years, proved fatal when she was rushed to hospital with a pulmonary embolism. A former president of an Argentinean association of plastic surgeons suggested the doctor might not have been "a real professional".
Evidently, around 50,000 plastic surgery procedures were performed in Argentina last year, a 60% increase in five years. The increase has been attributed to the growing numbers of foreigners traveling to the country, attracted by the low cost of procedures compared to other countries. Alarmingly, this may spell higher risks with not all doctors’ experience and credentials adding up.
This fact is not indigenous to Argentina however. There are quacks the world over, making these already risky, often unnecessary, procedures even more so. Plastic surgery, like any form of surgery, has its potential to go wrong, therefore seeking out a reputable surgeon is paramount. This sad incident reminds us that no matter what you’re going under the knife for do your research before hand, and never brush off any procedure as just “no big deal”, as Solange Magnano did.
