Black Pearl

Friday, October 10, 2008
Long before Dita Von Teese - the saucy brunette as famous for her powdered to perfection complexion as she is for bathing in champagne before capacity crowds wearing little more than sequins for modesty - there was Josephine Baker. A singer, dancer and sometime actress, Josephine was the talk of the 20’s and 30’s. Thanks to her risqué` reviews and uninhibited lifestyle she caught the eye (and imagination) of many great artists including Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemmingway, and went on to become an Art Deco icon. Get her look by smearing good old-fashioned Vaseline or Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream onto your lids and lips. You may choose to wear it on its own or mixed with a colour; either way the grease will catch the light, adding a super sexy shine. Fashion your hair into sleek waves or kiss-curls using a generous dollop of gel (any water-based gel will do; I find those cheap ones that come in a variety of sickly shades work best) and a fine-toothed comb. A vintage broach or clip, attached using a few bobby pins will finish your flashy new look and have you ready to shake your tail feather, or string of bananas, whatever the case maybe.

Best of beauty

I’ve been a make-up artist for the better part of a decade now: working in the fashion industry, on television commercials, music video clips and as a beauty advisor. I'll be taking this opportunity to comment on beauty in a conventional sense but also discuss how it can be found in the everyday and the seemingly mudane.
