shhhh lower your ears for georgia

Thursday, May 29, 2008
When I had a terrible breakup a few years ago a friend bought me a cheer-up voucher to have my haircut. It didn't mend my heart - but it gave me a reason to lift my chin up and made me feel better. A little transformation. A little magic with a black cloak and a pair of scissors and a little spray of mystical water.

A haircut is one of life's small pleasures.

Georgia Metaxas is a humble yet perfect photographer who understands the meaning of a good hair cut.

Her new project - about to open at the Queensland Centre for Photography - took her to the free haircutting sessions held at St. Mary’s House of Welcome, a non-profit Centre servicing the homeless and marginalized community of Fitzroy. And what has evolved is an amazing and candid documentary of ritual, identity and transformation.

"By presenting the subjects wrapped in the barber’s apron, devoid of social indicators such as clothes or accessories I aim to strip the portraits back to their essential elements. The camera is unflinching, stationed at eye-level in place of the hairdresser’s mirror"

This is a tough, tender and super interesting show.

RunAway Royalty RunAway ON 30 May 2008 01:03:25PM Ooooh interesting. You see some pretty interesting haircuts around Darlo, here in Sydney. Sometime I wonder if maybe the person cut their own hair in the dark. Fun though.
