Hair of the Blog - A Beer Dog in the Head

Saturday, July 12, 2008
As I skated through MACBA a few weeks ago I saw this dog (above) that was clearly suffering from a meaty hangover. It reminded me of the saying “Hair of the Dog” which has its roots in Shakespearean times. A few years ago I taught my non-English savvy French aunt the saying and she asked me what it meant. I said: “Well, I’m pretty sure it comes from the saying ‘Hair of the dog that bit you’ and it means that sometimes the solution of a problem lies in the cause of the problem it’s self. Just like the antidote for a snake bite”. I didn’t actually realise it came from a sketchy old rabid dog bite treatment which involved putting a hair of a dog in the bite! So anyways, my aunt Claire Gasseng really dug the saying and a few months later I got an email from her which read: “I have a very big headache today, last night we made a very big party and I drank and smoked very much… now I have how do you say: A beer dog in the head?” I lost it… what a classic! I think she may have reinvented the saying and taken it to the next level. My mum's dog genie had a beer dog in the head a few months back so I gave her my sunnies to take the edge off it...look how stoked she was!
