Dark Crystal-style unpolished crystal chunks were the accessory du jour at RAFW. Come spring they'll be a huge trend, with fashionheads hankering after them like a skeksis after a gelfling.

Amethyst and quartz were the most prolific stones, with rose quartz hues close behind. Dion Lee showed them on home-grown heels and accessories, Romance Was Born featured them on necklaces, a swimsuit print and one magnificent pink dress. Ellery stuck them on shoes, faces and Graz sunnies while Arnsdorf used a crystal for the label's first print and collaborated with jeweller Estelle Deve to show crystal jewels.

If you're lucky enough to be me or one of my pseudo-hippy middle class high school friends, you probably have a load of crystals in your jewellery box already. In my day, and my leafy green outer suburb, an amulet full o' rose quartz and peridot was just the poltice your angsty teenaged heart needed.

You may also have access to some chunky pieces from a hippy mother or aunt. I've nicked this Jurgen Jensen amethyst piece from mine.

This one reminds me of Doctor Who in Tom Baker days*. Maybe because the tardis was once powered by crystals before it was powered by CGI.

The new crystals are somehow edgier than those worn in the seventies. They're less magic happens, and more chunky, futuristic and statement-making.

Avoid complicated settings and over-polished stones and go for something raw that still retains the crystal's natural shape. Top local buys include A.D. by Michaela Bruton, who makes long-chained crystal pendants on sale at Alice Euphemia and The Outpost and Estelle Deve, who combines crytals with leather and sells via her website.
