The black and white cookie of fashion
Tuesday, May 06, 2008
The thing about eating the Black and White cookie of fashion, Elaine,
is you want to get some black and some white in each bite. Nothing mixes
better than vanilla and chocolate And yet somehow racial harmony eludes
us. If people would only look to the cookie all our problems would be
solved.
Like a perfect black and white cookie of international web fashpertise, I met up with Jason Campbell of the fashion bible the JC Report at RAFW. The sartorially savvy gent jetted in to Sydney just for the week and soaked up as much of our local fashion as he could. Their weirdest thing was, we shared so many opinions on the show it was like we were half of the same cookie!
I tapped his exhausted mind last thing on Friday, just before the after parties, for his take on the big themes of the week
"Tribalism. The big thing I noticed was tribalism, in embroidery, details, handcraft. That was especially strong at Romanace Was Born and Ginger and Smart, which were also my two favourite shows this week," said JC.
Like myself, he was somewhat shocked to find himself enjoying the pastels that Tina Kalivas showed.
"I know! I'm with you. I left that show thinking pastels! They work! I think it is definitely because of the shapes she used and of course the pastel was so big in the late seventies, early eighties where the high-waist comes from too. So to me it actually made sense."
JC had a hit list of show highlights which included Tina Kalivas, Dhini's ready to wear collection, Dion Lee from the Sydney Tafe show, Friedrich Gray and Life With Bird.
