Life, I have found, is significantly improved when wearing a scarf. French women are non-stop wearing scarves, and they have the reputation of being the most elegant, slimmest, Frenchest women anywhere.

I was doing a killer job helping the Thirsty Eagle turn her trash into dollars at her garage sale, and as a reward, she gave me this book The Scarf: The ultimate accessory. Good friend. I also got a 1970s cultural map of the middle east – another story.

The aqua, peach, grey and nifty illustrations of The Scarf: The ultimate accessory lead me to believe it was published in the ‘80s. Look at those little paisleys, and the perforated arrow leading your eye towards a clever peachy zigzag. Enticing, isn't it?

The intro reads: Tie The Scarf and add a sensational touch to any outfit. Try something new or one our popular favourites. So don't get into a knot: Tie The Scarf.

Well, I will. And what brilliant timing, just as the weather is cooling, and I can’t leave the house without a scarf, here comes 23 nifty ways to tie a scarf – including how to use a Jendi scarf clip.

My girls and I tried out some of these knots with great success. The instructions are pithy and direct and deliver jaunty results.

Here's Tommy in the square scarf fold-over knot:

How is your scarf collection looking? If it's sparse, you can get very decent vintage ones from Dorothy and Evelyn. I got this huge new woollen Babushka scarf from Russia, via ebay.

I also found this one I call Shredder from Sportsgirl's online store. You could make this one yourself if you had a length of jersey, some scissors and a little time:

And of course, there's this amazing Elke Kramer scarf we featured a while ago that deserves another outing, because it is eye-poppingly awesome. It's $250 from Alice Euphemia:

Next time, we'll explore the penultimate accessory. I don't know what that is yet, but I'll get there.
