Hat-tastic

Thursday, August 28, 2008
Melbourne Spring Fashion Week means hats hats hats. And hats mean races races races races. Yesiree, bare legs, toned backs, clever hats and French champagne are so close, my furry friends.

The MSFF clearly know how much everyone in Melbourne who loves a frock loves a horse race. They're got a full calendar of racing related events and exhibitions on.

For a start, from Monday night, you'll be able to peer into the windows of Hardy Brothers jewellery on Collins Street and check out a bunch of Richard Nylon's hats. They're always fantastic, and are usually accompanied by a Gwendolynne dress. You can stare in the windows any time, day or night, tipsy or straight. I recommend starting with a champs at Il Solito Posto first. Make it French, or at least a Proseco.

Wearing a hat can be a challenge. So many people think they're not "hat people". That's balderdash. Poppycock, even. Everyone can wear a hat and Hatiquette at the Victorian Racing Museum at Fed Square is the place to learn how to do it. It's all about the angle apparently. You can learn the skills at 12:30 Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th.

There's also a bunch of Torb and Reiner millinery workshops where you can work out what to do with feathers and sinamay and actually make your own hat. These are also at the racing musuem.

You might not have the mad skills to turn out a Nylon standard concoction, but at least you'll be one step closer to winning fashions on the field, or having something to chuck into at the end of a day of domestic fizz.
