Creativity encouraged in Project Runway shock

Tuesday, July 29, 2008
Despite Oren not being in the show anymore, I still ditched a cutie last night so I could watch Project Runway.  The date can wait, the fashion can't.

And fashion it was. The designers were asked to create a Brownlow dress for a client aka footballer's wife or girlfriend.

Bully for the judges, they highly commended the silent assassin's (Lui) foray into deconstruction and asymmetry! Yay! Personality, creativity and intelligent design wins! Well not wins, as such. Juli's very lovely lavender fluff with pearls actually won. And it was lovely. But Lui's gown was adventurous and succesful and the important people paid attention.

There is something about asymmetry and clever draping that makes the wearer appear more intelligent than they probably already are. It has everything to do with putting sexy boy-trapping cliches aside and projecting personality and strength instead of the killer rack.

It is true that any dill can shop at Nom*D or pick up some of Gareth Moody's pieces, it must be said. But in the forum of the Brownlow, with swarms of intimidatingly beautiful Rebeccah Twigleys around you, it takes true guts.

Other gory diversions from the stitching were the judges' (Kristy's) seeming disdain for Helen Manuell. Quick as a whip, Kristy lunged for something to critic the oldest remaining contestant on - she didn't listen to the client properly. The client had come in with a picture from a magazine. No serious designer would ever recreate something like that. It's not the hairdresser, you know.

Next week we'll see if Lui can ever get it wrong.
