Boo, Oren's out of Project Runway

Tuesday, July 22, 2008
What am I going to do on Tuesday nights now? I guess I'll have to go back to the gym and Media Watch now that Oren's out of Project Runway. That's right, the one bit of rugged mannish sauce on the show is gone, and we're now left with old cranky bossy boots, an adorable little camp lad and Lui, the silent assassin. Oh, and the others.

There's a key lesson in the Art of War to pick your battles. Helen picked her battle perfectly last night when she chucked a massive strop over Oren's use of her trouser block, and got him kicked off.

Helen made sure everyone knew what Oren had done, swore at Mr Roth and forced Oren to un-pick and re-do his design. A block is essentially the pattern behind a garment, not the pattern itself. You can buy them from Lincraft, for goodness sakes.

So last night's quirk was that the designs had to be made from car parts. That's right. rubber, door linings, electrical wires and product placement car badges. The judges deemed Brent and Shane's biker jacket and fur chaps the best piece and indeed, the jacket was incredibly well-constructed and hot. The furry chaps though? Really, what woman wants to add bulk to their thighs? Maybe only Stephanie Carta and there's just one of her.

Other highlights from last night included Juli's amazing mini dress which succeeded despite a trashy lace-up back and clunky bag from Helen.

The judges also told Marc and Oren that a big black belt around the middle is unflattering and adds bulk. Is that a call for the end to cinching? Last time I checked, the big black belt was a great way to create a waist.

Highlight three was the judges crushing Petrova's charming creative spirit and dismissing her car-spring headpiece. "It's more spacey than sporty" they said. The past two episodes have seen the judges push for more and more creativity, and Henry Roth encourages them to move beyond "safe" creations. So when little Petrova goes and pushes a boundary she gets shots down. Maybe there should have been better, more interesting accessories on the Myer accessories wall. Poor Petrova, she can't win, and maybe in the end she doesn't.

KwerkyGirl New citizen KwerkyGirl ON 22 Jul 2008 04:42:42PM Can I say that this show is the poor hillbilly cousin of the fabulous US version. At the very least Kirsty Hinze should tell the losers to "Piss Off" which is surely the Aussie equiv to Auf Wiedersehn. Also can't believe they booted out the eye candy blonde girl - big ratings loser.

Fabulous dahling

A life more fabulous is what we all need. From the wild ramblings of my diverted mind come these brain drops of fashiony goodness that may or may not have anything at all in common with what proper fashion authorities deem appropriate.
