This week is the first week of June which means winter is upon us in the Southern Hemisphere, so exciting. Time to pull out your winter coats, mittnes, scarves and beanies. Even though I do live in Queensland so the above outfit usually ends up in me sweating up a storm by midday. Never the less I love winter clothes and putting together a hot to trot winter wardrobe. I am desperate need of a new jacket as at the end of last winter I left my Cara Zampatti military jacket at a party, and was never to be seen again. ("Awww")
So I have set out on a journey to find the perfect staple jacket that is in fashion for Winter 2009. I have been in a heated debate with myself of late regarding "Is the leather jacket still in fashion?." There is so many other styles competing for the winter staple jacket title, such as the loose blazer, the shoulder padded jackets, and thick knits. After much Style.com, facebook, trend blogs and magazine research the "leather jacket" has again won hands down. Most fashionista's made a leather jacket purchase last season, and as a good quality jacket starts from around $500AUD not many people are prepared to give up the trend quiet yet. I do believe this is a great example of street fashion triumphing over the runway dictators.
We did see a few leather jackets pop up on the runway though. International designers such as Rick Owens, ALC and Burberry all embraced the trend, sending Leather Jackets down the runway, paired with harem pants, sheer blouses and patent heels and bags. Closer to home a few of my fav brands have done great leather jackets such as Tigerlily and Sass & Bide. The Australian label that got it 100% would have to be White Suede. This Melbourne based label have developed a cult following in a few short years, with stockist world wide. There mantra for beautiful fabrics fits in well with there 80's Zip Jacket. A buttery soft leather, with a wide collar in a classic black.

I would call the style "structured biker" which I hear is what this season is all about. Gold Coast Stylist Tara Rose say's that structuring is the key feature to look for. "The biker look this season isn't "sloppy" it's about great details, strong collars, structured zips and cuffs and in great quality leather. The Leather Jacket is back for this season a little bit more sophisticated. Take the look from day to night with greats heels and a statement print dress"
If you purchased a black leather jacket last season but want an update, look for a new jacket in an exciting new colour. Net-a-porter.com is full of great taupe, caramel and cream jackets. Its a fresh update on a classic style. This Donna Karen cropped jacket is a great wardrobe update yet so minimal it can be worn for years.

Ladies, get your shopping shoes on, (or your pj's if your an online girl) and find yourself the perfect leather jacket for the Southern Hemisphere Winter. The Leather Jacket is back in full biker force, jump on for a warm ride!
