This is why the internet exists.
Kutiman is an Israeli born musician/composer/animator with A LOT of time on his hands. Either that or he's just ultra dedicated to his craft. And it's a helluva craft.
Firstly, for those unaware - if you're not into the technical/theory side of music so much - there are pages and pages of 'How To Play' music lesson videos on YouTube. Posted by everyone from professionals to sloppy amateurs, there are quite literally millions of these things that are of little interest to anyone but other musicians. Basslines from famous albums, drum lessons, singing -
pained acoustic versions of Animal Collective songs - it's all there.
Kutiman has trolled the web finding all these bits and pieces, along with recitals, street performers and dudes fiddling round at home, and then grafted them together to form whole songs. Under the banner of Thru YOU, he's essentially created a mash up album of bedroom musos unknowingly playing with each other. It's amazing! Not just for the painstaking video work, but that some of the resulting songs are actually pretty awesome.
Kutiman's left in some of the players' asides and instructions, in doing so retaining the human element that so many of these type of efforts lack. Plus, there's just something kinda sweet about seeing all these people performing alone for their webcam. Mesmerising.
Here's the main one from the
Thru You page (via
rollededge.com), titled 'The Mother of All Funk Chords'
Kutiman - 'The Mother of All Funk Chords'
Something more melancholy and with vocoder action.
Kutiman - 'Wait For Me'
Keytar and freestyling.
Kutiman - 'I'm New'
Here's the creator and animator Kutiman himself explaining the relatively simple method of finding videos to sync. Which I find hard to believe. Even
this video looks like it took time.
