As much as I hate to admit it, Melbourne is a pretty happening place. There are a lot of cool people doing equally cool things. An every growing art scene, plus world-class restaurants and bars that all have a very unique style and aesthetic. It truly is a special place, but one thing that I think goes unnoticed is the music scene. We have such a strong and promising music hub in Melbourne. I’m the guiltiest man here. For so long I have taken it for granted. But it’s not until you peace out you realize Melbourne is a totally exciting place. The creative stuff is anyway.

Some of my favorite stores are Missing Link and Polyester Records. These places are stores I can go to and feel like my life is understood and has meaning. You leave with inspiration and enthusiasm. But if you’re ever in LA there is a store that trumps the lot of them. It is as if both those stores had a baby that was in the Guinness World Records book for its overwhelming weight. Amoeba Music located in Hollywood is the world’s largest independent record store going around. Started in the 1990’s Amoeba has the largest range of Vinyl this young man has ever seen. With bands like Band Of Horses doing in store shows every few months it’s hard not to fall in love with the place.

In an economy that is making it harder and harder for independents to survive, Amoeba is a true shinning light. If it’s done right and done well then success should follow and this is an example of that. Don’t get me wrong, if Melbourne had the population for stores like this to exist they would. But we are just small fish in a big sea and it sucks, but that’s beside the point. If you’re ever in California make sure you visit Amoeba and be ready to drop some money because everything is amazing.
