I’ve grown up influenced by a lot of nineties crap American TV – in my opinion every show I obsessed over somehow shaped my style and my personality, no matter how cringe worthy it was (yes, I’m talking Full House – yes, I wish I was Jessie Catsopolous’ long lost cousin from Australia). Remind me to tell you about meeting John Stamos at the 1992 Logies – now THAT’s a story! But I digress. One character who not only taught me the ins and outs of fashions as a teen, but how to rock a killer floppy hat was Blossom Russo aka Mayim Bialik.

2011 marks the 20-year anniversary of the series – which went to air on NBC in the summer of 1991. I’m sad that no one has paid homage to this fashion forward teenster, so I feel it’s my obligation to pay my utmost respect and school you all in just how vintage fashion became so huge even back then!

Blossom aka Mayim was known for not only her triple threat talents (singing, dancing, acting), but for having a ridiculous eye for fashion that belied her age. The costume designers on the show were given just one task – to make female viewers tune in to see what Blossom and her babbling sidekick Six were wearing each week.


Researching for my homage, I came across an incredible interview with Blossom costume designer Sherry Thompson detailing just how Mayim made floppy hats and vintage clothing a must have for girls like me. It’s an incredibly insightful read, and if you love Blossom as much as me, you’ll obsess over every last word Sherry speaks!

Putting my hip hop ego aside, I’ve included a couple of pics I found at mum’s house, on my last visit to Australia, where you can see my obvious infatuation with the fashion from the show. The highlight of the sitcom’s 5-year run would have to be Blossom’s amazing take on Madonna’s Truth Or Dare movie that came out the same year the show debuted. Mayim’s sensational pisstake of Madonna is so uncanny; she actually plays Madonna better than Madonna herself.


I’ve included the entire episode below for your amusement…I beg you to watch it! Just like the entire series, the episode is heavy on special guest stars from a very young Neil Patrick Harris (playing Warren Beatty) to Don King and David Cassidy. Oh and let’s not forget David Faustino playing the disgruntled ex-boyfriend. The costuming for the entire show is spot on, with Mayim replacing Madonna’s cone bra with her signature flower power get up…hilarious!

The great thing about this show is that although the designers were told not to worry about making the costumes look up to date with current styles, it actually is one of the only shows from its time that hasn’t dated and still sparks an interest with vintage fashionistas. With the show coming to an end in 1995, just as grunge was about to explode, we salute Blossom for giving us girls the chance to look way more classy than the fluoro madness that was left over from the eighties.
