Petals and veils give way to beer and pizza

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

West Australian brewery Little Creatures are setting up a drinking house in Fitzroy.  Not only that – frillandalier Mariana Hardwick is vacating to make way for the kitchen.  Yum.  If Little Creature’s Fremantle brewery is anything to go by this is very, very exciting news.

The Freo brewery is a giant shed on the water (not far from renowned Cicerello’s, but far more worthy of a visit) with a big ol’ glass wall down the middle.  One side’s the pristine brewery, the other’s a cool bar and eating space with vats towering above and unique little happy wait staff (affectionately known as Creatures) flitting around toiling out some of the best beer and grub around.  There’s delectable pizzas, sharing bits like pancetta embraced tiger prawns and some of the best kangaroo you’ll find.  And for those who judge a restaurant by its water closets, the men’s latrine has a window into the brewery.

Head Chef Mark Gill will be overseeing the Fitzroy establishment’s menu so there’s every chance we could capture him and make him answer important questions (How do you get the frites so buttery?  Will you marry me?).

Pardi... girl

Lou Pardi is a Melbourne writer, comedian and chocolate assesor. Pardi was trained to use words by a pack of lawyers (a particularly aggressive strain of wolf) in a cave in the basement of a Sydney skyscraper. She eventually escaped to Perth, and then Melbourne where she embraced the arts and is hanging on for dear life. Pardi now applies her words liberally (like chocolate sauce) to celebrate food, chocolate, pasta, theatre, life, death and kittens. And most anything else that crosses her path.
