Laura Lees brings neon angst to London fashion week

Friday, September 19, 2008
The Laura Lees runway was full of teenage angst and rebellion at London Fashion Week yesterday, but with a naughty, neon twist. Best known for her hand worked, graffiti like embroidery, Lees has collaborated with many of fashion’s heavyweights including Luella Bartley and Giles Deacon. However, following Lees' catwalk spread, it seems that she is on the fast track to becoming a force to be reckoned with in her own right.

Neon colours, mesh tanks and an explosion of embroidered stars, skulls and flowers sauntered down the runway to slow, dirty pop songs. The thick bass line created and air of sex, while the models possessed a demeanor of nonchalance reminiscent of insurgent youth. Styled like post modern geishas, the models seemed to embody culture clash, indicative of a rapidly globalizing style community where traditional notions of fashion and beauty collide, before fusing together to create new concepts. Lees essentially upends convention, championing the way to a (very) bright fashion future.
