I am all for excellence and efficiency in everything. Excellent traffic light sequencing and perfectly placed and designed storage make me high. Subtle, clever pieces of design - like those little paisley-shaped doorstops - bring me glee.

Another thing that makes me high, giving props to the new generation of designers and not resting on the acheivements of people like Herman Miller, Eames, the Bauhaus etc.

The Australian Design Award - James Dyson Award recognises this kind of perfection in young people's designs. It's our country's stab at the international award series.

The entries in the award this year include a safety wetsuit for big wave riders, a "four-wheel drive" prosthetic foot, a new foldable comuter bike and a stylee zimmer frame for when we design-heads get old and frail. I love the zimmer, it looks like a drinks trolley by Amanda Levete.

The Australian International Design Awards will be presented on Friday 29th May and whoever takes out the prize will get $4,000 and a trip to the UK to take part in the international James Dyson Award. That means you could visit Designersblock and Design East if you're in town at the right time.

What's that picture of up there, you're asking? It's an Issey Miyake/Dyson collab. They have some kind of design love club going on.
