When she's in town, I'm lucky enough to say I live in the same city as
Georgia Metaxas. She's a portraitist artist documenter extraordinare - otherwise known as a photographer.
I've just recently seen her work in Habitat at Utopian Slumps, Collingwood and
Reportage, in Paddington.
If you're in Sydney on the 24th, get to Reportage on its last day and see Georgia's series
Lower Your Ears shot at St Mary's House of Welcome on Brunswick Street Fitzroy. Why is it part of Reportage, an exhibition jammed with war photogrpahy and natural disaster documenting? I guess because it chronicles a day in the life of real people who lead different lives to us. The hair cut seems to be amazingly emotional for these people, and Georgia manages to capture that.

I know the lady loves to travel and one of recent trips took her to New York where she spent days in the subway standing in one spot, snapping everyone who appeared in front of her.
I love this series. It's like little moments trapped in amber, everyone bringing their own story to exactly the same spot to do the same thing. Few people turn their attention to her in this series, but one guy does. It's an interesting turn of events - the watched watching the watcher.
