Video game cliches

Friday, October 10, 2008
While most gamers admire the creativity and imagination of the world's best developers, too often video game designers rely on tired cliches. The weapon crate and the exploding barrel would have to be two of the most over-used gaming staples, but today Games Master would love to hear some of your nominations.

Some other of my suggestions include:

- The reluctant hero (often also with amnesia)

- Block-pushing puzzles

- Ice and lava worlds

- Crates to push around so you can access higher areas or cover switches

- Boss fights, with your momentous foe featuring an easily exploitable weakness and a repeating pattern of attack

- Slow-motion bullet time

- Enemies that drop keys or other useful goodies upon their death

-  Invisible walls

- Pointless collection errands to artificially extend the game's length

- Magical medikits that instantly restore your health

- Role-playing adventures that begin with the young protagonist waking up and exploring his house and home town

- Lock-picking or computer hacking mini-games

- A stealth interlude in an action game

- Females with gigantic breasts.
