Australian SingStars: you can soon sing unencumbered by those messy, annoying cords. Sony has announced wireless microphones will finally be released for both PlayStation 3 and PS2 in early April.

The microphones were thoroughly tested by select members of the SingStar community last year, who overwhelmingly gave their thumbs up to the new products. Sony has been working on wireless microphones for many years, but had problems with lag spoiling the karaoke experience, and also wanted to keep the units as affordable as possible.

"When you sing we can't have any latency going into the system on the audio that you hear back," Paulina Bozek, executive producer of SingStar, told Gamesmaster last year. "And it's quite difficult to nail that with a wireless solution, especially two mics. (But) there's been a lot of work going on."

Over 15 million SingStar games have now been sold around the world, including one million in Australia, while Microsoft released a SingStar competitor called Lips late last year (complete with wireless mics).

The microphones will be available separately to SingStar games, and cost $79. The launch of the new microphones will coincide with SingStar Pop Edition for PS3. The game's track list includes the following songs:
