Nostalgic gamers have long dreamed of a revival of the point-and-click adventure game popularised by LucasArts and Sierra over two decades ago. Today there is hope.
LucasArts has promised that it will look at resurrecting some of its classic adventure games such as Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango if gamers buy its upcoming remake of The Secret of Monkey Island. "If this sells, there’s no one at this company who doesn’t want to do these games," says LucasArts Community Manager Brooks Brown.
"It’s a matter of showing that there’s interest and this market is alive and get people as excited as possible about Monkey Island Special Edition to show that these things can make it."
Coming soon to Xbox Live Arcade and PC digital download services, Special Edition has clearly been a labour of love for many developers within LucasArts, and is being developed alongside a new Monkey Island game by Sam & Max developers Telltale.
Special Edition has hand-drawn high-definition graphics, remastered music, and all the game's side-splitting dialogue has been recorded by the actors who worked on The Curse of Monkey Island. There's also a full hint-system for those stumped by the game's fiendish puzzles, and a streamlined command system.
Users can also instantly switch between the classic and new versions at the press of a button to see how faithful LucasArts has been to their hilarious adventure.
"LucasArts is really proud to be bringing (Monkey Island) back after a 10 year hiatus," says Brooks. "It’s been 20 years since the first game, we’re really excited to be coming back."
