An extremely rare gold-coloured cartridge for the primitive Nintendo Entertainment System given away to celebrate a video game tournament in 1990 is currently up for grabs on eBay with a starting price of $25,000. The competition was loosely based on the movie The Wizard.

Only 11 of the cartridges are known to exist, although 26 were manufactured. The last gold cartridge that changed hands sold for $15,000 and the eBay seller claims it is the "Holy Grail" of gaming.

The cartridge features three games - Tetris, Rad Racer and Super Mario Bros. Click here to see the eBay listing.

Today many rare games and hard-to-find gaming hardware attract dizzying prices on eBay by collectors, especially items boxed and in mint condition. But while some collectors are intent on making money from the current retro gaming fad, Gamesmaster believes the vast majority of collectors are dedicating gaming fans who want to preserve video gaming's heritage. The high price of many Nintendo items, including rare NES carts and Game & Watch units, highlights the passion many gamers have for Nintendo's heritage and gaming nous.
