Microsoft has unveiled a new Halo game that
will have players controlling a new character instead of Master Chief. Halo 3: Recon is in development at acclaimed games
studio Bungie, despite the developer gaining its independence from Microsoft 12
months ago.
Recon is a standalone expansion
for Xbox 360 that lets fans experience events leading up Halo 3 and see the fate of the
Earth through the eyes of a new hero - a special forces Orbital Drop Shock
Trooper. Like its predecessor, Recon will feature a story-based campaign as
well as multiplayer modes, and is due in Spring 2009 - a 12 month wait.
Microsoft says the game will feature new tactical stealth for the first time in the popular series. "While
the feel of this new chapter greatly resembles that of previous Halo
experiences, Halo 3: Recon will require you to employ more elements of stealth
and cunning than ever before."
Microsoft also confirmed that real-time strategy
offshoot Halo Wars is still on track for a release early next year for Xbox 360 despite
the imminent closure of developers Ensemble Studios, and will feature those dreaded foes the Flood.
Halo 3 enjoyed one of most successful launches
in entertainment history, with over US$300 million in sales in its first week
alone. It has now sold over eight million copies, and was one of the best
selling console games in Australia during 2007, selling over 70,000 copies.
