Sony and Microsoft have announced new
versions of their PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games consoles.
From today, Australians can buy the latest
Pro version of the Xbox 360 for $499. The new model has the same features as
its predecessor, but triple the hard drive space at 60GB. It comes with a
wireless controller, headset, ethernet cable and component TV cable.
Two other versions of the Xbox 360 are
still available: the Arcade for $349 (which lacks a hard drive) and the Elite,
which features a 120GB hard drive and costs $649.
Meanwhile, the latest PlayStation model
will be available to Australians on August 28.
The new model has the same features as the
current 40GB PS3, but double the hard drive space at 80GB. It also features a
Dual Shock 3 controller, marking the official demise of the much-maligned
Sixaxis pad.
The PS3 console's recommended retail price
remains the same as the current 40GB version - $699.
Over 350,000 PS3 consoles are now installed
in Australian homes, while sales of the Xbox 360 in Australia are now
approaching 400,000.
