All your base are belong to us

Thursday, August 28, 2008

Most people can recite quotes from iconic films like The Godfather, Casablanca, Star Wars, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Life of Brian, Scarface and Taxi Driver, but what are your favourite one-liners from games?

It's testimony to the poor quality of most game dialogue that arguably the best-known quote in the gaming canon is the Engrish classic "All your base are belong to us", a gem taken from obscure Japanese Megadrive title Zero Wing.

But the notable exception in a sea of bland scripts is the point-and-click adventure genre. Early 1990s LucasArts titles in particular always offered very high-quality dialogue putting most modern games to shame.

Gamesmaster would love to hear your nominations for your favourite game quotes, and I've started the ball rolling with a few examples of memorable lines to test your gaming knowledge….

1. "I'm not your Mary"

2. "Come get some!"

3. "That was too close. You were almost a Jill sandwich."

4. "I am Error"

5. "Hello, fellow road crew worker. Welcome to the Road Crew."

6. "Do you know where sailors hang out?"

7. "Why didn't you just shoot me when I walked in?"

- "Because we had an extra disk."

8. "Rise and shine, Mr Freeman. Rise and shine."

9. "Where should I put this so it doesn't hurt anyone we know or care about?"

- "Out the window. There's nothing but strangers out there."

10. "What is a man? A miserable pile of secrets!"

11. "WHAT A PERVERT!"

12. "I need a weapon."

13. "Who does this guy think he is? Now I gotta dress like a chump as well as hang out with him? I like this shirt."

14. "You can't hide from the Grim Reaper. Especially when he's got a gun."

15. "You know, LeChuck was a deviant, obnoxious, slithery, creepy-crawly kind of a guy, but I'll say one thing for him. He sure looks nice exploding against the night sky."

16. "A little fear will control the minds of the common people."
