Since I finally managed to secure myself a digital set-top box after months of wistful longing, I have been revelling in the glory of channel-surfing.
I sit on the bed (my apartment is, ow you say, not particularly big), two remotes in hand, and fly through the various permutations of digital broadcasting until I find something that takes my fancy.
It reminds me somewhat of the early days of "cable", where every man and his dog signed up for a trial of Foxtel, breathlessly surfing the various channels and wowing about things like
Extreme Home Makeover and
Inside The Actors' Studio: Geena Davis.
However - and this may be the first flush of new love, but either way it's compelling - I haven't had the crushing crash I always experience after a few days' of subscription-tele surfing.
With cable, eventually the patterns emerge and repeats become something you can set your watch by; with digital, aside from the "free (televisual) presents!!!" feeling that comes without a monthly subscription, it does still feel like everything is relatively fresh.
Which brings us to my latest discovery/greatest love of all: Pro Bull Riding on ONE.
The packaged highlights broadcasts are part of the sports channel's "American Fridays" line-up, which also predictably includes basketball and baseball. But Pro Bull Riding, something I've only really known about in theory but never watched, BLEW MY MIND.
This is the sort of hyperbole that accompanies the sport:
And this is the batshit crazy sport itself, as explained by rider Ty Murray:
And the names! I couldn't work out which was better, the names of the riders or the bulls. Here are a few match-ups from Friday's championship round; see if
you can pick human or bovine:
Sean Willingham vs Booger Butt
Wiley Peterson vs Optimus Prime
Mike Lee vs Holy Moly
Cord McCoy vs Ricky Bobby
One of the riders is called PISTOL ROBINSON.
And the commentary! If Big Train had dreamed it all up for an edition of World Stare-Out Championships they couldn't have written something more bananas:
"That bull, Blizzard - in my opinion - is on of the most deceiving bulls in the PBR."
"That's what he does best is dominate bulls, and it ain't only little bulls he dominates."
"He's ridin' one of the rankest bulls in the world with just his hands."
"This lil bull is a Hotel California ride, real wild."
"I ain't seen him be ride any as far as Chris has."
In short, if 6.30pm rolls around each Friday and you find yourself in need of a little lift before the weekend, please tune your box to ONE and settle in for some Pro Bull Riding.
You will not be disappointed, no sirree.
