When it's difficult to split two candidates on actual policy it can come down to the quality of their campaign song (just me?). With nothing to see or hear at home ("Stand Up"? No, "Shut Up") we look abroad for a hook worth getting behind..

Tony Abbot has nothing on Sri Lanka's R Dumindha Silva who looks like a lost member of The Expendables in this recent election spot, and the heroic sounding theme song doesn't hurt. In fact Hollywood should consider this guy for the rumoured remake of Schwarzenegger's 80's action classic Commando. A future Governator?

Some elections are so historic they simply cannot be captured in perfect 3:30 minute form and warrant a whole musical. Obama's race for the White House was one such race but the United States weren't feeling quite so united at the time and producers of Hope - The Obama Musical Story decided they might find a more receptive audience in Germany where thousands had shown up in Berlin to watch him not be George W. The lyrics, the casting, the sudden switch to German, random acts of breakdance; this has it all. And introducing Joe Cocker as John McCain...

While Gillard and Abbott stumble offensively around the gay marriage question spare a thought for Malaysia where sodomy (and oral sex) is banned and homosexuality is blamed for bird flu by government ministers. Iran is looking forward these days (except when it comes to gays; even the Pet Shop Boys). As befits a country entering the nuclear age their 2009 Presidential candidate made a surprising choice for his official election song. Perhaps it was one visionary reform measure too far; he lost...

Alice Cooper said it all best in 1972 with a reworking of his own track "Reflected". Has any potential leader topped this horn section yet? No, they have not. This was also one of the first story-line driven music videos, so a properly visionary election song to boot. Cooper wins...
