Today (26th) marks the one week anniversary of a magical moment in Australian TV history: Delta Goodrem's Getaway segment in search of "the Seattle sound" which has now been helpfully added to YouTube "by Delta Daily - your daily source for Delta Goodrem."
In case you weren't watching (drunk), Delta opens her report by explaining that she never really liked grunge but "as a songwriter" she does like lyrics and finding out where artists come from, skills that will help in her quest to learn about "the Seattle sound". As she says all this her eyes flick up and away a few times. Do body language experts reckon this is a sign of lying? I can't remember clearly as I'm far too confused by her outfit.
Before we can dwell too long on the merits of assigning Delta Goodrem this piece we're off to an independent record store which Delta totters into on her vertiginous heels in the patient company of Dan, a local "muso" and "urban adventures" tour guide. "Maybe I'll belong here", wonders Delta in her voice-over. Early impressions are good as she quickly launches into a passionate speech about why she loves vinyl albums because they force the listener to hear the album in a certain order. But before we can dwell on Delta's bossy nature Dan quietens her by making her listen to Pearl Jam on some headphones. This backfires when Delta attempts simultaneous head-banging and air guitar, forcing a puzzled Dan to stare uncomfortably at the spinning vinyl. Maybe the spinning will hypnotize him and when he wakes up this will all be over.
It isn't. After a quick visit to Kurt Cobain's house and a coffee-break where a busker seems to call Delta "poison" we're off to the The Crocodile Cafe to see Dan the muso / tour guide play his own Seattle sound with his band. At this point I'm a little in love with Dan. He was so patient with Delta. I don't think I could have been as patient.
Delta rattles off some flight details and it's all over, leaving me to wonder why there isn't a series called Delta Does... in which Delta stumbles through places of historical and musical importance she's not really interested in, wearing outfits deemed suitable to the region by a stylist who cannot be trusted. Delta Does... Manchester. Delta Does... New Orleans. Delta Does... anywhere awkward. And I want it produced by whoever decided Matt Newton was a suitable host for the multi-million dollar X Factor or that black face was a good idea for Hey Hey in 2010.
In the meantime, Getaway is on again tonight, hopefully with more of Delta continuing her musical education, and in the hour leading up to the second part of Ben Cousins' Such Is Life. Sounds like drinking-game night.
